Bread and Butter Pickles

25 cucumbers, sliced                                

3 onions, thinly sliced                                

2 green bell peppers, thinly sliced 

3 cloves garlic, chopped                                

1/2 Cup pickling salt

3 Cups cider vinegar

5 Cups sugar

2 Tbsp mustard seed

1/½ tsp celery seed

½ tsp whole cloves

1½ tsp ground turmeric

 

1. In a large bowl mix together cucumbers, onions bell peppers, garlic and salt.  Cover with Ice and allow to stand for approximately 3 hours.

 

2. In a large stock pot, mix the cider vinegar, sugar, 

    mustard seed, celery seed, cloves and turmeric.

    Bring to a boil

 

3. Drain the liquid from the cucumber mixture and rinse lightly.  Stir  the mixture into the boiling vinegar mixture.  Remove from  the heat before the combined mixture comes to a boil.

 

4. Transfer to sterile containers.  Seal and process 10 minutes in a boiling water bath.  (Or do not process and keep in the refrigerator until ready to use.)
